A1・2 Past tense of nouns and adjectives

Meaning：

Example：

• 日曜日にちようびは雨あめでした。- It was rainy on Sunday.
• テストは簡単かんたんじゃありませんでした。- The test was not easy.
• パーティーは楽たのしかったです。- The party was fun.
• コンサートはあまりよくなかったです。- The concert was not very good.
• 旅行りょこうはどうでしたか。…とても楽たのしかったです。- How was the trip? …It was very fun.

A3 ～は～より～

Meaning：

• This sentence pattern compares Noun1 with Noun2 to describe its quality or state.

How to use：

[Noun1] は [Noun2] より［Adjective］です

Example：

• アメリカは日本にほんより大おおきいです。- The United States is larger than Japan.
• わたしは弟おとうとより背せが高たかいです。- I am taller than my younger brother.
• ユニクロは無印良品むじるしりょうひんより安やすいです。- UNIQLO is cheaper than MUJI.

A4 ～と～とどちらが～ですか。…～のほうが～です。

Meaning：

• This question asks the listener to choose between two things (N1 and N2). When comparing two things, use the question word“どちら”.
• To answer, use“ほうが”to show which one you choose.
• “どちらも”means“both”.

How to use：

[Noun1] と [Noun2] と どちらが［Adjective］ですか。

…[Noun1 or Noun2] のほうが［Adjective］です。

Example：

• すしとラーメンとどちらが好すきですか。…すしのほうが好きです。- Which do you like better, sushi or ramen? …I like sushi better.
• フランスと日本にほんとどちらが暑あついですか。…日本のほうが暑いです。- Which is hotter, France or Japan? …Japan is hotter.
• ユニクロと無印良品むじるしりょうひんとどちらがいいですか。…どちらもいいです。- Which is better, UNIQLO or MUJI? …Both are good.

A5 ～で～がいちばん～ですか

Meaning：

• This sentence pattern asks the listener to choose“the most～(いちばん)”from a specific group or category (N). The question word you use depends on what category you are talking about.
• Use the particle“で”to show the group, range, or category you are talking about.

How to use：

[Noun] で なに／だれ／どこ／いつが いちばん［Adjective］ですか

Example：

• スポーツで何なにが一番好いちばんすきですか。…テニスが一番好きです。- What sport do you like the best? …I like tennis the best.
• 家族かぞくでだれが一番歌うたが上手じょうずですか。…姉あねが一番上手です。- Who is the best singer in your family? …My older sister is the best.
• 日本にほんの海うみでどこが一番きれいですか。…沖縄おきなわが一番きれいです。- Where are the most beautiful beaches in Japan? …Okinawa is the most beautiful.
• 1年ねんでいつが一番雨が多あめ　おおいですか。…6月がつが一番多いです。- When is it the rainiest in a year? …June has the most rain.
