A1 ~とおもいます①

Meaning:

  • The particle と is used to introduce thoughts or information when using おもいます.
  • “~とおもいます”is used when expressing a conjecture.

How to use:

[Plain-form] とおもいます

Example:

  • サッカーの試合しあいはきっと日本にほんが勝かつと思おもいます。- I’m sure Japan will win the soccer match.
  • 日曜日にちようびは人ひとが多おおいと思おもいます。- I think it will be crowded on Sunday.
  • 来月らいげつはひまだと思おもいます。- I think I’ll be free next month.
  • 先生せんせいはどこですか。…たぶん教室きょうしつだと思おもいます。- Where is the teacher? … I think he is probably in the classroom.

A2 ~とおもいます②

Meaning:

  • “~と  おもいます”is used when expressing an opinion.

How to use:

[Plain-form] とおもいます

Example:

  • 日本にほんは便利べんりだと思おもいます。- I think Japan is convenient.
  • 日本語にほんごの勉強べんきょうはどうですか。…おもしろいと思おもいます。- How is your Japanese study? … I think it’s interesting.
  • 日本にほんについてどう思おもいますか。…料理りょうりがおいしいと思おもいます。- What do you think about Japan? … I think the food is delicious.

A3 ~といいます①

Meaning:

  • The information expressed with いいます is indicated by the particle と.
  • When quoting someone directly, the exact words are repeated.

How to use:

[Sentence] といいます

Example:

  • ご飯はんを食たべるまえに、「いただきます」と言いいます。- Before eating a meal, we say “Itadakimasu.”
  • 社長しゃちょうは「明日あしたからアメリカへ行いきます」と言いいました。- The president said, “I will go to the U.S. starting tomorrow.”

A4 ~といいます②

Meaning:

  • When quoting what someone said indirectly, use the plain form before the particle と.

How to use:

[Plain-form] といいます

Example:

  • 私わたしは、部長ぶちょうに明日あした休むと言いいました。- I told my manager that I will take tomorrow off.
  • 山田やまださんは今日は仕事きょう  しごとが大変たいへんだったと言いいました。- Mr. Yamada said that work was tough today.
  • 会議かいぎで何なにか意見いけんを言いいましたか。…はい、無駄むだなコピーが多おおいと言いいました。- Did you say anything during the meeting? … Yes, I said that there are too many unnecessary copies.

A4 ~でしょう?

Meaning:

  • “~でしょう?”is used to ask for the listener’s agreement or to confirm information with them.
  • When a noun or a な-adjective is used before ~でしょう, だ is omitted.
  • It is rude to use this expression with people of higher status, such as older people, superiors, or people you are meeting for the first time.

How to use:

[plain-form] でしょう?

Example:

  • この料理りょうり、おいしいでしょう?…はい、おいしいです。- This food is delicious, isn’t it? … Yes, it’s delicious.
  • 明日あしたのパーティーに行いくでしょう?7時じまでに来きてください。- You’re going to the party tomorrow, right? Please be there by 7:00.
  • テストは難むずかしかったでしょう?…いいえ、そんなに難むずかしくなかったです。- The test was difficult, wasn’t it? … No, it wasn’t that difficult.

~ないと。

Meaning:

  • ~ないと means“must”or“have to,”and it is used as a casual expression or when talking to oneself.

How to use:

[ない-form] と。

Example:

  • もう帰かえらないと。- I must go home now.
  • 明日あしたテストだから、勉強べんきょうしないと。- I’ve got a test tomorrow, so I’ve gotta study.
