[補足]
後件には程度の表現が必要。
〇小学生のわりに、たくさん食べる。(「だくさん」が程度の言葉)
〇小学生のわりに、背が高い。（「高い」が程度の言葉）
×小学生のわりに、魚を食べる。（程度の言葉がない）
- 「わりに」と「にしては」は同じように使えるが、以下の違いがある。
〇父は年齢のわりに、元気だ。
×父は年齢にしては、元気だ。
〇父は70歳にしては、元気だ。
例文
- 安いわりに、味はすごくいい。
The taste is great, considering it’s cheap.
- あのレストランは高いわりに、料理があまり美味しくない。
That restaurant isn’t very good, considering its high prices.
- 子供のわりに、しっかりしている。
He’s quite mature for a child.
- 彼は運動しないわりに、健康だ。
He’s healthy despite not exercising.
- 彼女は日本に長く住んでいるわりに、日本語があまり上手じゃない。
She’s not very good at Japanese, despite having lived in Japan for a long time.
- 初対面のわりに、すぐに打ち解けた。
We got along right away, even though it was our first meeting.
- 忙しいわりに、彼女は家事をきちんとこなしている。
She manages to do the housework well, even though she’s busy.
- 学生のわりに、彼はすごくお金を稼いでいる。
He earns a lot of money, considering he’s a student.
- 身長のわりに、食べる量が少ない。
He eats less than expected for his height.
- 彼は年齢のわりに元気だ。
He’s energetic for his age.
- 彼は音楽が好きなわりに、全然楽器が弾けない。
He loves music, yet he can’t play any instruments.
- 彼は見た目は優しそうな顔をしているわりに、意外と厳しくて仕事に対してはとても真剣だ。
He has a gentle appearance, but surprisingly, he is strict and very serious about his work.
- あの映画は予算が少ないわりに、特撮や演出がとても迫力があって驚いた。
That movie had a small budget, yet the special effects and direction were so impressive that I was surprised.
- 彼女は英語を学び始めてからまだ半年しか経っていないわりに、すでにかなり流暢に会話ができるようになった。
She’s only been learning English for six months, yet she’s already able to converse quite fluently.
- そのホテルは外観が古いわりに、室内はとてもモダンで快適で、設備も充実していた。
