～して、今まで気づかなかったことに気づいたときや、意外に思ったときに使われる
[英語訳]
Use “～たら／と” when you have noticed something you had not been aware of until that time or find something surprising.

[補足]
文末に動詞を使う場合は「～ていた／ていなかった」をよく使う。
例文
- プレゼントの箱を開けたら、すてきな時計が入っていた。
When I opened the gift box, there was a beautiful watch inside.
- 一昨日買ったパンを食べたら、腐っていた。
When I ate the bread I bought the day before yesterday, it had gone bad.
- 歩いていると、急に雨が降ったきた。
While I was walking, it suddenly started to rain.
- 友達の家に行ったら、留守でした。
When I went to my friend’s house, they were not home.
- 彼女になぜ会社を辞めるのかを聞くと、急に泣き出した。
When I asked her why she was quitting her job, she suddenly burst into tears.

- 知らない電話番号からの電話を取ったら、間違い電話だった。
